In the first phase of the Programme a Magistrate came to Gaztelueta to talk to the students about Justice. In the second phase our students have visited the Bizkaia Court of Appeal and have attended several trials.

Yesterday, the students of the course travelled to Bilbao and attended several trials They saw the professionals of the judiciary in action: judges, prosecutors, defendants and their defence lawyers, interrogation of witnesses, video witness statements, evidence, etc. Afterwards they did a tour of the premises of the Audiencia and the Juzgado de Guardia, at all times accompanied by some Magistrates and members of the Ertzaintza in the role of Judicial Police.

At the end of an oral hearing the pupils were able to ask questions to the Judge and the Prosecutor about their work at the hearing, the judicial career. On their return to Gaztelueta, the students made an assessment of the activity, highlighting the aspects that aroused their interest, the issues that most caught their attention, what they had learned during the study visit, etc.

Nearly 50 judges and a total of 86 Basque schools are taking part in the programme this year. Educating for Justicewhich aims to bring the functioning of the judicial system closer to Basque secondary school, Baccalaureate and vocational training students.

Educating for Justice is an initiative promoted by the Communication Office of the General Council of the Judiciary, with the participation of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country. Likewise, the Department of Equality, Justice and Social Policies of the Basque Government, through the Vice-Ministry of Justice, is in charge of co-organising the programme.
