Near <strong>1.3 million people<\/strong> were sent there and <strong>more than 1.1 million died<\/strong>. As you enter, you will be impressed by the sign with the slogan <strong>\u201cArbeit macht frei\u201d.\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cWork liberates\u201d), with which the SS greeted deportees from the opening of the camp, the <strong>20 May 1940<\/strong>, until its release on <strong>27 January 1945<\/strong> by the Soviet Red Army. One of the moments that had the greatest impact on us was the visit to the <strong>Block 11<\/strong>, a prison within the camp itself. Being in the <strong>TRAIN TRACK<\/strong>, where the prisoner convoys arrived, has been particularly harsh. Most of the people who went down there were taken directly to the <strong>GAS CHAMBERS<\/strong>. Born into a Jewish family, she went through a period of atheism and was a brilliant student of philosophy, becoming the first woman to submit a doctoral thesis in this discipline in Germany. She collaborated with the philosopher <strong>Edmund Husserl<\/strong>, The founder of phenomenology after a long intellectual and spiritual journey, she converted to Catholicism in 1921. She was canonised in 1988 by <strong>Saint John Paul II<\/strong> and named <strong>patron saint of Europe<\/strong> in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we have focused entirely on the visit to <strong>Auschwitz I and Auschwitz-Birkenau<\/strong>. It has been a very intense experience, difficult to explain in words, but necessary.
